Langenthal revisité

For the installation presented at the Ariana Museum, the artist focused on a frieze that decorates the pieces of a current porcelain service from Langenthal. This motif was enlarged to an exaggerated scale and reworked before being applied, using cut transfers, onto a series of plates. By playing with optical effects and shifts in proportion, Michèle Rochat introduces a new rhythm that overlays the regular cadence of the original ornament. Each plate thus becomes the bearer of a random fragment of the design.

Pour l’installation proposée au Musée Ariana, le regard de l’artiste s’est posé sur une frise ornant les pièces d’un service actuel en porcelaine de Langenthal. Ce décor a été agrandi de manière démesurée et retravaillé, avant d’être appliqué par le truchement de transferts découpés sur une série d’assiettes. En jouant sur des effets d’optique et de proportions, Michèle Rochat induit un nouveau rythme qui se superpose à la cadence régulière de l’ornement original. Chaque assiette est alors dépositaire d’un fragment de décor aléatoire.
