Anaerobia

2022

The installation Anaerobia proposes to consider fermentation as an artistic medium in its own right, alongside ceramics. The links between the two are numerous: their methods and gestures, the relationship between content and container, and the physico-chemical transformations that occur through firing in ceramics and through microorganisms in fermentation.

The tension between the presentation of images from scientific research and objects stemming from artistic and domestic practices invites us to reflect on our relationship to food and to living systems, as well as on the making of art and knowledge. It also raises questions about the relationships between these different fields—which we tend to separate: how can we coexist, collaborate, and care for, create with, and learn from the microorganisms that surround us?

Installation: Glazed stoneware jar, fired at 1250 °C, diameter 28 cm, height 35 cm, red cabbage in fermentation. Digital prints and plant-based dyes on natural textiles (silk and cotton) in various formats.
